Essential Medicines for Maternal and Child Health

Supporting Access to Essential Medicines in Sierra Leone

Access to Priority Medicines for Maternal and Child Health in Sierra Leone

TESS Development Advisors has been working with DfID Sierra Leone to support DfID’s goal of ensuring access to essential medicines. As the NPPU, DfID and its partners work together to optimise procurement of essential medicines, TESS’ three-person team contributed expertise in clinical service delivery, procurement and access to medicines. This multi-disciplinary approach emphasises the importance of understanding different perspectives on how medicines are prioritised, procured, delivered and used.

The World Health Organization highlights the importance of essential medicines as a core part of a national health system, stating that « essential medicines are intended to be available within the context of functioning health systems at all times in adequate amounts, in the appropriate dosage forms, with assured quality, and at a price the individual and the community can afford. » (www.who.int/medicines/services/essmedicines_def/en/).

Access to essential medicines, and particularly access to services for maternal, neonatal, child and adolescent health is a key area of interest to us at TESS. Investments by DfID and others are critical contributors for ensuring universal access to health services.
