1 juil 2014 | Under News | Posted by

Uniting behind a commitment to accelerate progress for improvements in maternal and child health, international and national partners have gathered in Johannesburg for the 2014 Partners Forum of the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (PMNCH).

Mrs Graça Machel, Chair of the PMNCH Board, opened the proceedings with a though-provoking and engaging address, noting that “we come with a united message that the needless deaths of women, newborns and children must stop ». She reminded participants that there were just 500 days left to achieve the MDGs and thus « every day counts, every action counts and every life counts ». Sharing her personal experience, she quoted President Mandela’s words as she called for continued commitment to progress, indicating that « it is up to you ».

Among those emphasizing their support for maternal and child health were the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, Mrs Hillary Clinton, the South African Deputy President Hon. Cyril Ramaphosa, the Hon Minister of Health of South Africa and the Director General of The World Health Organization Dr Margaret Chan. The speakers welcomed the increased interest in maternal and child health and noted the need to build and expand momentum. They called on stakeholders to consider not only the immediate health context but also to address all the socio-economic and other determinants on health.
